The month of May is an ideal time to get out and explore the city of Detroit. The weather is nice, the flowers are blossomed and the city is always vibrant. One way to do so, which is also great exercise, is to rent a bicycle and roll through the city’s many unique neighborhoods.
One option includes hitting up Wheelhouse Detroit (located at 1340 Atwater St.) for a rental. There are many fun excursions nearby to visit. Adult rentals start at $15 for two hours. Consider this an idea to get you going in the right direction (see what I did there?). Here are some places you can make the trek to.
If food is what you’re after, there are several nearby restaurants to consider. Redsmoke Barbecue in Greektown is only about a one-mile ride from Wheelhouse. If barbecue isn’t what you’re craving, other Greektown options include Pappy’s Bar and Grill, Pegasus Tavernas and Fishbone’s.
After you’re fueled up with food, stop and check out something unique. The Museum of Contemporary Art is about two miles away from Redsmoke, and once you find your way to John R Street it’s pretty much a straight shot (and then a left onto Garfield Street). MOCAD features and promotes contemporary art culture.

By now, perhaps you would like a drink (not too many, you’re biking!). The Bronx Bar is a mere half of mile away from MOCAD. Other close bars include Lefty’s Lounge and The Old Miami.
While near the Bronx Bar, I would also recommend stopping in at Third Man Records, which is a mere 500 feet away. The record store was founded by Detroit’s own Jack White.
By now you have already been on quite a trek. Leaving from Cass Corridor back to Wheelhouse would be about a three and one-half-mile ride, and you get to enjoy all of the scenery the route allows for.
Of course this is just one option for a possible action-packed day. There are many other things to do in the great city of Detroit. Explore it by renting a bike, taking a tour or even trying a pedal pub. Detroit has so much to offer, it would be a shame to let it go unnoticed.
